Notes: Billy Boat was originally scored as the winner of the race. When Luyendyk came to Victory Lane to protest, he was thrown to the ground by A.J. Foyt.
The scoring error led to the IRL taking full sanctioning responsibility for the series. USAC had shared sanctioning duties up to this race.
Boat and Salazar had their qualifying times disallowed and were required to start 21st and 22nd.
Unser, Velez, Carlson, and Zampedri did not make qualifying attempts and were started 23rd through 26th.
Unser was substituting for Mike Groff, who broke his leg in a crash in the Tuesday practice session.
Qualifying was based on two timed laps followed by one lap with a timed pit stop.
