Notes: The FIA had suspended the licenses of several drivers for skipping drivers meetings at the advice of FOCA, although such attendance was not required by the rules.
King Juan Carlos insisted that Real Automóvil Club de España, the local organizer, hold the race, and Spanish FIA affiliate Federación Española de Automovilismo removed their sanction.
The race was thus sanctioned by the Formula One Constructors Association and FIA officials were removed from the track by law enforcement.
Ferrari, Renault, and Alfa Romeo withdrew from the event to protect their standing with the FIA in other areas of motorsports.
Championship recognition was officially withdrawn by the FIA in an emergency meeting on June 2 in Athens.
All drivers who participated in the race were fined by the FIA as well.
